CHAPTER 34 “ALL SAINTS”

In 1933, the bishop at All Saints was assigned to the boys' home in Iowa with the instruction to secure long-term funding for the place before being transferred to a better place. After four years, a man named Wilson arrived claiming to be from the Parker Foundation, an affluent Catholic fund. He wanted to bring Calvin Evans back. In order to get funding, the bishop told Wilson the boy was dead.

Wilson shockedly agreed to endow the Calvin Evans Memorial Fund for science and sports at the home. Years later, when Calvin appeared on Chemistry Today's cover, the bishop received a call from Avery Parker of the Parker Foundation, who was furious to learn she had been lied to. The endowment was canceled.

The bishop has been avoiding Wakely's call, tired of Calvin's past trouble. Wakely calls the home again, pretending to be a donor to Calvin Evans' childhood home, to prove Madeline wrong. The bishop admits that Calvin was raised there and accidentally reveals that the Parker Foundation funded the Calvin Evans Memorial Fund at the home.

Wakely tells Madeline that Wilson was her fairy godmother and gives her the Parker Foundation's post box number. Madeline is confused about why the Foundation funded and then rescinded a memorial for her then-living father. But she insists that she will find the truth, surprising Wakely with her realization that religion isn't based on faith.
