CHAPTER 37 "SOLD OUT"
Roth hears Elizabeth call Calvin her "soulmate." She describes how Calvin respected her work ethic and abilities, how Donatti stole her research and published it as his own, and what happened to her at UCLA. Elizabeth talks to Roth about her family, Calvin's childhood and past, his death and guilt, and how it led to her own failures.
Despite Elizabeth's wealth of personal information, Roth writes about abiogenesis instead. Roth denies his editor's request for Elizabeth's "dirt." Two months later, the article emphasizes Elizabeth's beauty and quotes her father, Dr. Meyers, Mrs. Mudford, and Donatti, who calls her "Luscious Lizzie." Mrs. Mudford has also provided a picture of Madeline's family tree, which includes Walter, implying that Elizabeth is sleeping with him. Within 24 hours, the magazine sold out.
