CHAPTER 40 "Normal"
One evening, Elizabeth and Wakley discuss normalcy on her back step. She admits that she read his letters to Calvin and that Calvin took the Hastings job based on Wakely's weather advice. Wakely remembers that Madeline told him Six-Thirty knew 981 words and that he told her he didn't believe in God. Elizabeth tells Wakely about her brother John's suicide and her guilt. Elizabeth must forgive John and accept herself to move on, according to Wakely. Elizabeth says she understands John's feelings and sometimes wants "out," but Wakely says her problem is that she wants back in.
