CHAPTER 43 "STILLBORN"
Avery and Wilson reiterate their offer to Elizabeth and discuss upgrading the lab; Wilson casually mentions Calvin Evans's unfinished work. Elizabeth connects Calvin's rich donor and the man he thought was his father from his diaries. Elizabeth becomes hostile, believing Wilson is Calvin's blood relative and is here to steal Calvin's research, but Avery asks to speak with Elizabeth alone.
Elizabeth confronts Avery about Wilson, Calvin, and All Saints, and Avery tells her
a story: A 17-year-old girl's parents sent her to a Catholic home for unwed mothers after she became pregnant. She refused to sign away her unborn child and was locked in a room alone during labor before the doctor anesthetized her. Her baby was stillborn when she regained consciousness.
Ten years later, a nurse at the home told her the truth in exchange for money: her son had been adopted by a family that had died in a series of tragic accidents and sent to a boys' home in Iowa. Calvin's biological mother, Avery, has been searching for him.
