CHAPTER 25 “The Average Jane”
Elizabeth enters the set in a drab dress with a number two pencil in her hair and test tubes in her hands. She calls the set "revolting" as the cameras roll and leaves to talk to Walter, forcing the crew to cut to commercial. Walter informs her that the set cannot be changed because it was designed for the "average Jane," whom Elizabeth should address.
Elizabeth ignores cue cards when she returns to the camera. As Elizabeth talks about how wives, mothers, and women are underappreciated and promises to do something meaningful with them in 30 minutes, women are captivated. Lebensmal screams at Walter after the show, threatening to cancel it. Walter begs Elizabeth to read the cue cards, but she refuses, citing her conscience. Her show also receives many phone calls from viewers wanting to clarify Elizabeth's shopping list, while Walter's afternoon show never did.
