CHAPTER 28 "Saints"
The librarian helps Madeline find an Iowa boys' home's address. Wakely, now a reverend, overhears the conversation and helps Madeline find the home using the few details she has. Wakely explains the difference between secret and private to Madeline and admits that everyone keeps secrets, including himself.
Wakely and Madeline find the All Saints Boys Home, but it only has a phone number. Wakely calls the home to find out Madeline's father is Calvin Evans. Wakely began writing to Calvin after being impressed by Calvin's remarks at a Harvard conference. Even though they disagreed, Wakely and Calvin liked each other. Wakely was shocked when Calvin confessed to wishing his father dead, ending their pen-pal relationship. He arrived at Commons after his father's death and took over his father's congregation. Calvin died before he could find him in the Commons.
Wakely officiated the famous scientist's funeral and saw Elizabeth and Six-Thirty there. Madeline shows Wakely a "family photo" of Calvin's coffin, Elizabeth, and Six-Thirty from the funeral, explaining that she was in Elizabeth's womb at the time. Wakely declares that families don't fit on trees after hearing Madeline's words.
Wakely shares a secret with Madeline before she leaves. Wakely is amazed at what Madeline shares, while Madeline reassures him that his is not so bad.
