CHAPTER 42 "Personnel"
Elizabeth has received no university or research lab offers since leaving Supper at Six in January 1962. Elizabeth learns from Harriet that Hastings' Head of Personnel, "Miss Frask,'' called for her. Elizabeth replies that Frask is a Wakely typist, not at Hastings. Elizabeth calls back and Frask's secretary, Miss Finch, answers. After Elizabeth is put through, Frask congratulates her on an article that put her on the cover of a magazine and asks her to come in as soon as possible with Six-Thirty—the abiogenesis investor is back after seeing her letter in Life.
Finch asks Elizabeth to sign her copy of Vogue, which features Elizabeth's face and the title "Why Their Minds Matter," when Elizabeth and Six-Thirty enter Frask's office. After four months, Harriet gave up on Vogue publishing Roth's unpublished article. However, the article was published.
The investor requires Frask to take Elizabeth and Six-Thirty to Calvin's old lab. Elizabeth is warmly greeted by Wilson and Avery Parker, who invite her to continue her abiogenesis research at Hastings. Donatti arrives to meet Wilson as Elizabeth turns to leave. Elizabeth, Frask, and Avery surprise Donatti.
Wilson, now Frask's lawyer, informs Donatti that he is being fired because the Foundation investigated Frask's Life letter and found many of his misdeeds. After acquiring a majority stake in Hastings, the Foundation made changes. Frask is the new Head of Personnel, and Elizabeth is being offered Donatti's old Chemistry directorship. Avery hands Donatti a termination notice to sign and suggests that someone who knows his work should decide his employment status; Elizabeth takes a beating, then hands Donatti a pen and declares him "just not smart enough".
